On March 11, 2014, a group of students, on behalf of all the teachers and students of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China(abbreviated as RDFZ), paid a visit to the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University, where 18 congenital heart disease children from Linzhou in Henan Province are receiving medical treatments. During their visit, RDFZ students sent the 18 young patients schoolbags and clothes as gift and presented martial arts, dancing and violin performances, wishing them a happy stay in hospital and an early recovery.
According to Director Zhang Mingkui of the department of cardiac surgery of the Beijing-based hospital, the congenital heart disease is a defect in the structure of the heart and great vessels which are present at birth, and is among the most common birth defects. The birth deformity affects the living quality of those young sufferers and even claims their lives if they miss the best time for treatment. Thus, the congenital heart disease has become one of the leading causes of birth defect-related deaths among children under 5 years old. Approximately 6 to 9 children in 1,000 are born with a congenital heart defect of different kinds, and more than150, 000 children are born each year with the congenital heart disease on the Chinese mainland, official statistics show. Babies born with heart defects can be cured or treated through surgery with costs ranging from 20,000 up to 100,000 yuan.
The medical aid program for children with congenital heart disease from unprivileged rural families is jointly launched by Aiyou Charity Foundation, Yuruomu Charity Foundation, Linzhou Municipal Government of Henan Province, and the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University. Li Heping, general secretary of China Federation of Patriotic Project (CFPP), highly affirmed the endeavor, hailing the charity project devoted to saving young patients’ lives and the wellbeing project as important means to convey love and benefit the whole society. Curing a baby means changing his destiny and will exert a significant influence upon promoting a harmonious society and achieving the great Chinese dream.
“We need to work out a better plan, raise special funds and make arrangements in a coordinated way, so as to provide comprehensive medical aid for children with congenital heart disease from Linzhou in Henan Province. This way, we will strive to make sure that all congenital heart disease children from Linzhou will have access to effective treatments,” said Secretary Zhen Zhonghua of Linzhou city in Henan Province while visiting these young patients.
