人大附中 Chen Jinshi, head of Ocean Club of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China(abbreviated as RDFZ), has successfully launched multiple kinds of activities and club meetings to promote ocean knowledge, with vigorous support and assistance from RDFZ and the State Oceanic Administration. Over the past year, Chen Jinshi, using RDFZ Ocean Club as a platform, has made painful efforts and done tremendously in enhancing ocean awareness among his schoolmates and in exploring the ocean’s mysteries.

On June 17, 2013, Chen Jinshi gave a speech titled “We Can Do Our Parts to Enhance Ocean Awareness” to 3000 faculty members and students of RDFZ during a flag-raising ceremony, with the presence of officials from the State Oceanic Administration. Chen’s speech was highly praised by the audience and the event was covered by China Ocean News.

Chen Jinshi told our reporter that during his summer trip to Iceland, he accidentally ran across the icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, docked in Iceland on its scientific Arctic expedition with researchers and sailors aboard. He boarded the Snow Dragon, touring the cab and lab and listening to the glorious history of the research vessel and icebreaker and the wondrous secrets of the ocean realm. Ever since then, Chen Jinshi’s life has somehow got involved with ocean. Back home in China, Chen Jinshi bought lots and lots of books about ocean to find out more about the wondrous world of the ocean. Gradually he came to realize that only with a healthy and thriving ocean can China be powerful.  It is for that reason that Chen Jinshi initiated RDFZ Ocean Club, focused mainly on popularizing and boosting ocean knowledge among his schoolmates and exploring the ocean’s mysteries. And his tour of the research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong is the direct reason behind the founding of the club.

Over the year that followed, Chen Jinshi went to the frontline of marine work, visiting the Institute of Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilization (Tianjin) and China Marine Surveillance. He even took a rescue boat to the South China Sea experiencing rescue operations. Chen Jinshi said, inland secondary school students usually know little about the ocean. When the Ocean Club was introduced, he was faced with the biggest challenge of directing club members’ attention to the ocean and arousing their interest in marine research. Therefore, he contacted the State Oceanic Administration in hopes getting an opportunity to visit relevant marine research institutes. On the first day of 2013, the club members travelled to Tianjin by train with their teacher to visit the Institute of Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilization (Tianjin). The half-day tour of the institute immediately ignited their interest and enthusiasm and motivated them to probe into the issues pertaining to the secrets of seawater, the difficulty in seawater desalination and the application of desalinated water.

In the year of 2013, Chen Jinshi was widely involved in marine work. He led his club members to visit the Institute of Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilization (Tianjin) and Tianjin Polar Ocean World. As well as inviting marine experts to give lectures to RDFZ students, he vigorously spread and enhanced ocean awareness at a flag-raising ceremony. He donated money so that his peers in China’s central and western regions could afford a trip to the fascinating ocean. He delivered a speech called “the Glory and Horror of the Ocean” at a winter camp. He went to University of California – Berkeley majoring in oceanography to learn more about ocean knowledge. He even went as deep as the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to collect samples in an effort to study the issue of marine pollution. He was involved in the program of “Advice from Nestling Hawks ” sponsored by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality and presented a report “Conserve the Diversity of Ocean Creatures,  Raise the Awareness of Marine Environmental Protection”. He took part in the research project on “photosynthesis efficiency of Cyanobacteria under different conditions” as research group head. Upon learning that Chinese icebreaker Xuelong, on its 30th Antarctic expedition, was stranded in the Antarctic's heavy ice Hoes when going to the aid of the Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy, RDFZ Ocean Club immediately sent a letter of condolence to the research team.

“It is good to know that over the years since our club was founded, an increasing number of students have begun to pay attention to the changes happening to the world ocean, to the magnificent feats of Chinese marine heroes. What’s more, they have concerned themselves with threats facing the ocean, such as climate change, pollution and depletion of marine life. I also feel the considerable support of our school leaders and teachers as well as all-out help from the State Oceanic Administration. The affirmation of our marine work from students, teachers and experts, the increasing interest in the ocean, and that the students in the mountainous areas of Guizhou Province wanting to join our club, all these aspects let me realize the significance of my work. And this is perhaps the greatest achievement I have reaped!” he said to the reporter.

According to sources, RDFZ Ocean Club is the first-ever club among secondary school students themed on the ocean in Chinese inland regions. Chen Jinshi is determined to take “promoting the ocean, exploring the ocean” as his responsibility and strives to enable more and more students to learn about the ocean, and to enhance their ocean awareness, trying to make due contribution to the dream of making China stronger through marine development.
